Wedding Planning By A Control Freak

Do we hear wedding bells?! Yes! The lovely Beck got engaged in 2018 and is in full swing planning her dream wedding. She’ll be sharing her story along with hints and tips along the way. Here’s Beck’s take on planning a wedding when you’re a control freak:

Let me preface this story with – I have always wanted to get married. I may have some issues with the traditional construct of marriage, but ultimately, I believe in a lifelong commitment between two people in the presence of their loved ones and in the eyes of the law. In terms of tradition and religion- let’s say I am a little more relaxed, (considering the original idea of a wedding resulted in the woman becoming the property of her new husband...) Not ideal for the modern woman.

That dilemma to one side, wedding planning can be both a rewarding and stressful time for any spouse to be. At times, it can feel like the whole thing couldn’t be further from a love story, and I’d be lying if I didn't say I felt a lot of suppliers take advantage of the ‘romance’ to play on your emotions. My best advice is to keep a cool head- whatever you are planning. There are always options, so never feel ‘obliged’ or ‘rushed’ into a decision.

It is important to look after your wellbeing during this period. Try to get plenty of sleep, start a new health plan and try to eat well- your skin will thank you.

I am fortunate to have found the person I want to spend the rest of my life with, and after 9 years together already we know each other pretty well. Organising something like a wedding can call many parts of your relationship in to question- particularly when one of you is (unofficially) OCD, and the other is an organisation aficionado.

If I say to keep things simple and not get swept up with Pinterest images, then I would be a complete hypocrite. Ultimately, trust your gut and get a consensus. If something doesn't feel right, then it probably isn’t! We can all lust after the dream wedding and the beauty of Pinterest is there’s something there for all tastes and every budget.

Have a frank discussion about wedding means to each of you. Are there any ‘must haves’ or ‘must do’s’? Be sure to write them down to help remember to include them!

Although Pinterest is a great source for inspiration, make sure you see the photos as just that. It’s hard to separate the reality from a styled photo shoot or a wedding on a limitless budget. The confetti cones above are beautiful but bear in mind …

The confetti cones above are beautiful but bear in mind to recreate this will cost between £100-200 for 60 guests. Puts it in perspective - no?

I will be sharing my planning journey with you, with ideas and inspiration along the way- don’t worry we will do this together!

Since our engagement earlier this month, I have begun to start looking into options and ideas. I will be sharing these with you as I go, with focussed posts and genuine recommendations (no paid endorsements). All stories will be tagged with ‘Wedding’, so you can easily search for them on our site.

The location should be one of the first things to consider. If your spouse to be isn’t overly bothered than making sure they understand the consequence of that ambivalence- if you choose a far-flung destination, will they be as chill? Is there a family connection to somewhere? Again, if something is important make sure this features in the discussion. It is by far the biggest factor of the day and could be the biggest headache.

For now, get lost in images and inspiration. Write down anything that catches your eye and I’ll be back with Part 1- Picking ‘The’ Place very soon.
